Summer Intern

This summer we welcome Melissa Foucar to Magdalena as an intern for The Fatted Calf. Melissa is from Camarillo, California and is a junior at Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo where she is majoring in Animal Science and working the Cal Poly Meat Laboratory. Her main responsibility this summer will be to develop leadership training materials in Spanish based on the Seven Habits curriculum.

Pork Science Class

Recently, we had hands-on training of hog harvest , pork carcass fabrication, and pork product processing for some of the older students at Casa Vida y Esperanza (CVE). The pig was grown on wheat and table scraps and cared for by the boys at CVE for the past six months. We harvested and dressed it at CVE, then transferred the carcass to Productos Carnicos La Mision (PCLM) for chilling and processing.

Nonprofit Status

We are very excited that the IRS approved The Fatted Calf for tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) exempt organization on October 1, 2010.  This means that the IRS recognizes our nonprofit mission and therefore we are not required to pay any taxes, including sales tax.  It also means that you can make a tax-deductable contribution to our mission of providing hope and career education for the fatherless and less fortunate.  At this point, the only way to make a donation is by sending a check or money order to The Fatted Calf, 103B 22nd Avenue, Brookings, SD 57006.  However, w

Website Structure

As you probably noticed, we have restructured our website.  We have made these changes to more clearly define the distinction between the education and training mission of The Fatted Calf and the meat processing activities of Productos Cárnicos La Misión.  As we progress towards our goal of providing hands-on education to teach leadership, work ethic, personal responsibility and enthusiasm for entrepreneurialism, we will provide updates of our progress and impact on this site.  We are also in the process of establishing a separate website for Productos Cárnicos La Misión.
